When you experience symptoms of a possible heart condition, a stress test can provide important information to help diagnose the problem. If you’re seeking expert heart evaluation, call the clinic or schedule your consultation online today.

What is a stress test?

A stress test is a diagnostic procedure that shows how your heart performs during increasing levels of activity. It uses an electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor heart function while you exercise, or medication may be given to stimulate the heart if exercise isn’t possible.

Why would I need a stress test?

At Padder Health Services, stress testing helps identify the cause of symptoms such as:

  • Heart palpitations

  • Chest pain

  • Dizziness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Fainting

It also helps diagnose conditions like arrhythmias and coronary artery disease, monitor treatment effectiveness, and determine whether further testing or changes in therapy are needed.

How should I prepare for a stress test?

Preparation is simple. Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes since you’ll usually walk on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike. Avoid eating, drinking, or tobacco use for about four hours before the test.
Tell your provider about any medications, vitamins, or supplements you take — you may be advised to temporarily stop certain medicines beforehand.

What happens during a stress test?

Before the test begins, electrodes are placed on your chest and back. A blood pressure cuff and oxygen monitor are also attached. Your resting heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure are recorded first.

You will then either receive medication to stimulate your heart or begin exercising. The intensity gradually increases until the test is complete or you reach your safe physical limit. In some cases, breathing measurements or echocardiogram images may be taken during the procedure.

Afterward, you rest while your heart rate returns to normal and your provider monitors your recovery. The results help evaluate your heart health and guide your treatment plan.
